1992 Jersey
£1 Silver Proof The Hebe
During the nineteenth century Jersey enjoyed great economic expansion, largely due to the important influence of the shipbuilding industry. To salute this age-old craft the Royal Mint has been commissioned to strike a series of seven
£1 coins. Six of the coins are to depict locally built vessels while a seventh will bear a representation of the official seal of the Bailwick in use from 1844 to 1870.
This coin, the third in the series, features the Hebe, a two-masted brig built by Daniel Le Vesconte of First Tower for J. Le Boutillier et Cie. She was registered in Jersey as 240 tons and launched in January 1861. Regularly traveling between Jersey and Canada, the Hebe was wrecked on Bryon Island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in October 1887.
The reverse of this coin has been designed and modelled by Royal Mint engraver Robert Evans and portrays the Hebe in full sail. The obverse bears Arnold Machin's elegant portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Around the edge of the coin can be found the inscription CAESAREA INSULA meaning Island of Jersey, the name given to the island by the Roman Antonius in AD300.
Coin Specifications:
Denomination -
£1
Alloy - .925 sterling silver
Weight - 11.68 g
Diameter - 22.50 mm
Issue Limit - 3,000
